February 6, 2012 – With all the variety we get from food and drink choices, it can be surprising to know that many people can still get deficient in the most important vitamins. This is because not all the foods and drinks we have available are rich in nutrients or even healthy, for sometimes the foods we just love to eat won’t give us any essential vitamins and nutrients. This is especially true for vitamin B12, a nutrient that we hear little of, but which our bodies literally cannot be well and healthy without.
Having enough vitamin B12 in your system means that your red blood cells are healthy and that your nervous system is functioning perfectly and your brain stays sharp and strong. This means that vitamin B12 is essential for protecting you against blood, tissue, and muscle problems as well as disorders of the brain and nervous system. And this is true, because vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to anemia, bone marrow degradation, loss of sense of touch, Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar disorder, cognitive impairment, mania, psychosis, dementia, and others. In fact, your body needs vitamin B12 so much that if you do take more than you need of the nutrient from natural sources, you won’t experience vitamin B12 side effects at all, for your liver will naturally store up any excess B12 for future use.
If you have too little vitamin B12 in your body, your doctor may require you take regular injections of synthetic B12, for injections can give higher doses than taking the vitamin in oral form. However, reactions on the injected sites is a pretty well-known problem, especially for vitamin B12 since the vitamin is naturally processed not through the blood but through the stomach. The injected site can react in the form of a swelling or bump, accompanied by redness and/or pain. These reactions should be left alone unless your doctor advises you to use a particular cream or ointment to avoid any further injury that might lead to infection.
If you’re experiencing side effects while taking vitamin B12 injections not to treat deficiency of the vitamin but for something far less serious like weight loss, you should consult your doctor first, who may advise you to stop taking the injections especially if you don’t need it. Vitamin B12 is not like a low-carbohydrate diet or work the same way as apple cider vinegar weight loss, for it doesn’t affect the metabolism of calories and fats in any way. Protect yourself from side effects by taking B12 injections only when you need it, and call your doctor at once if you notice any changes around the injected site after getting an injection.
